Elmer Fudd

From category: Cartoon Characters

Elmer Fudd is one of the slightly more infamous of the Looney Tunes (TM) characters, the inept hunter always trying to track down "dat wascally wabbit" Bugs Bunny.

And, in true comedy style, he has his very own style of speech, which is understood universally as Elmer Fudd style.

We shouldn't mock, really, because it is an unpleasant speech impediment, but in Elmer Fudd's case, we'll stretch the point, because he shouldn't be trying to catch Bugs all the time.

For anyone who hasn't come across Elmer Fudd trying to catch "dat scwewy wabbit", please do check it out!

At its simplest, Elmer Fudd's speech turns all 'r' and 'l' sounds into a dull 'w' sound, and 'th' becomes more of a 'd' sound. It is, of course, more specific and involved than this.

I think this is one of the most complete and thorough translations of Elmer Fudd's style out there. (But wouldn't I say that anyway?)

If you were to actually say some text in Elmer Fudd style, you would realise very quickly that just changing r's and l's to w's just doesn't work, because of things like 'wr' (e.g. 'wreck'), 'rr' (e.g. 'scarred') and so on. In fact, you have to approach it almost from a true linguistic point of view, in that an r only makes a true r sound if it is followed by a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u and y in this instance) and is not immediately after a vowel itself.

E.g. "explore" should become "expwore" not "expwowe" if you actually say it.
